What Is Bariatric Surgery?
Bariatric Surgery refers to a number of operations and medical procedures to help obese people safely lose weight. Research has shown that yo-yo dieting and fad-poor diets don’t help with long term weight-loss. Several studies have shown that patients long-term are able to maintain the weight-loss even after 25 years after a gastric by-pass!
Who Can Have Bariatric Surgery?
Patients with a BMI of over 40 statistically will struggle to lose weight and keep it off. However, anyone with a BMI of over 35 can be considered for Bariatric Surgery. It is important to note that Bariatric Surgery is a tool and should be treated as such. The patient is fully supported for 2 years with regular check-ups and dietary advice, after the operation.
What Are The Surgical Options?

What Are The Benefits Of Bariatric Surgery?
Patients are often surprised by the effects of Surgery. It is a common outcome that patients who were Type 2 Diabetic are often put into remission after a Gastric Bypass or Sleeve Gastrectomy operation. Patients often lose between 50-70% of their excess body fat and have overall better health. Obesity can lead to problems with conception and general fertility problems. Diabetes and high blood pressure are other weight related conditions which over time can lead to a decreased life expectancy. Bariatric surgery has proven to be solution to these and many other health related problems.
I took on board your advice to limit various activities, especially in the first 2 weeks, and things have gone very smoothly throughout my recovery. I’m really pleased to inform you that today, one month after the surgery, I ran 10k non-stop at a pre-operation pace without any pain or discomfort in the hernia repair region. As I explained to you, running is my passion and I’m delighted that I can now resume these activities without the complications I had experienced before the procedure. In summary, the whole process, from the initial assessment to the review 3 weeks after the operation, has been excellent. Your expertise in performing the repair and leaving very minimal scarring is quite amazing. I would readily recommend your skills in performing this type of surgery.
